April 4 ‘Remembering King, Realizing the Dream’ March & Rally Promoted Quality Jobs, Education and Safer Neighborhoods

LOS ANGELES – Thursday, April 9, 2009 – On April 4, 2009, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Los Angeles (SCLC/LA) held a march and rally to commemorate 41st anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Entitled “Remembering King, Realizing the Dream,” the event drew over a thousand participants and called attention to and renewed the focus on the need for quality jobs and education and safer neighborhoods and included a march from Foshay Learning Center that traveled west on Exposition Boulevard to Dorsey High School where a rally took place. Rally speakers included: California Assembly Speaker Karen Bass, Mike Garcia, President SEIU Local 1877, Faith Culbreath, President SEIU SOULA Local 2006, María Elena Durazo, Executive Secretary -Treasurer, Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, A.J. Duffy, President, United Teachers of Los Angeles, Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Executive Director of the Community Coalition in Los Angeles, Damien Goodmon, FixExpo.org, and the SCLC’s Reverend Eric Lee. Community partners for this event included the: SEIU, AFL-CIO, United Teachers Los Angeles, Fix Expo Campaign, Say Yes to Children!, Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy, Brotherhood Crusade, and Mothers in Action.
