The Southern Christian Leadership Conference is trying to remove its Los Angeles president, Rev. Eric P. Lee, over his support of gay marriage. It’s reopening the rift over African American support of Proposition 8. Jennifer Steinhauer at the New York Times:

During the battle last fall over Proposition 8, an amendment to the State Constitution that banned same-sex marriage, the chapter’s president, the Rev. Eric P. Lee, was more than a tangential figure for the opposition. He was front and center at an opposition group’s large rally at City Hall and marched in the blazing sun for 15 miles in Fresno. Many other local African-American pastors prepared mailings featuring church leaders in support of the proposition and linking their views to Barack Obama, then the Democratic nominee for president.Mr. Lee “was very helpful to us,” said Rick Jacobs, head of the Courage Campaign, a left-leaning political action group in Los Angeles that fought the initiative.

[skip]

Mr. Lee said that his opposition to Proposition 8 “created tension in my life I had never experienced with black clergy.”

“But it was clear to me,” he added, “that any time you deny one group of people the same right that other groups have that is a clear violation of civil rights and I have to speak up on that.”

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Los Angeles (SCLC/LA) and its Rosa Parks Sexual Assault Crisis Center will join the nation in recognizing April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in an effort to raise awareness and promote the prevention of sexual violence in America.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LOS ANGELES – Monday, April 6, 2009 – The Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Los Angeles (SCLC/LA) and its Rosa Parks Sexual Assault Crisis Center will join the nation in recognizing April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in an effort to raise awareness and promote the prevention of sexual violence in America.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), among high school students, 9.3% of black students and 7.8% of Hispanic students reported that they were forced to have sexual intercourse at some time in their lives. In the same survey, the CDC reported that out of 9,684 adults, 10.6% of women reported experiencing forced sex at some time in their lives and 2.5% of women surveyed said they experienced unwanted sexual activity in the previous 12 months.

The SCLC of Greater Los Angeles believes that by engaging high school students in mentoring programs or other skill-based activities that address
healthy sexuality and dating relationships and helping parents identify and address social and cultural influences that may promote attitudes and violent behaviors in their kids, there is a lesser chance of young men and women growing up to be victims or perpetrators of sexual violence. In addition, creating policies at work, at school, and in other places that address sexual harassment and by developing mass media (e.g., radio, TV, magazines, newspapers) messages that promote norms, or shared beliefs, about healthy sexual relationships, America can lessen the occurrences of sexual assault violence.

Serving mostly African-American and Latino female victims of sexual assault in South Los Angeles, the SCLC’s Rosa Parks Sexual Assault Crisis Center continues to be a catalyst for empowerment.

The mission of the SCLC of Greater Los Angeles is to promote the philosophy of its founder Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., of non-violent progressive social change. For more information and to get involved, please call (323) 290-4100 or visit sclclosangeles.org.
